It happens to everyone
You come home to find a van blocking your driveway. Or you return to your car in a car park and someone's boxed you in. It's frustrating, it wastes your time, and if it keeps happening, it's infuriating.
Here's what UK law says and what you can actually do about it.
Is it illegal to block someone's driveway in the UK?
On a public road: It's not technically illegal to park across someone's driveway if your car isn't on the dropped kerb itself. However, the council can issue a PCN if there's a Traffic Regulation Order in place, and the police can act if the obstruction is dangerous.
On private land: If someone parks on your private property and blocks you in, this is trespass. You can't clamp or tow the vehicle yourself (that's illegal under the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012), but you can contact the police on 101.
7 practical steps when you're blocked
1. Check for a contact number
Look for a phone number on the dashboard, a note, or a QR sticker. If the driver has a TapReach sticker or similar, scan it to contact them instantly.2. Ask nearby
Knock on doors or ask in local shops. Someone usually knows whose vehicle it is.3. Call 101 (non-emergency police)
If the vehicle is causing an obstruction on a public road, call 101. The police can attempt to trace the registered keeper through the DVLA.4. Contact your council
If it's a parking violation (yellow lines, dropped kerb), your council's parking enforcement team can issue a PCN and arrange removal if necessary.5. Take photos and note the time
Document everything — registration plate, position, time, date. You'll need this if you make a complaint or claim.6. Don't retaliate
Don't leave angry notes, key the car, or block them in return. This can escalate into criminal damage or harassment charges — against you.7. Install a QR sticker on your own vehicle
The best defence is making sure people can reach you too. If your car is accidentally blocking someone, a QR sticker lets them ping you instantly instead of calling the council. How to prevent it happening again
